OVERVIEWUbiquitous Energy seeks a skilled and highly motivated PV Module Engineer to join its transparent photovoltaics Pilot Lab who has experience in the design, fabrication, characterization, and optimization of optoelectronic thin films and devices. The Pilot Lab functions as a bridge between the device R&D and manufacturing teams, and the candidate will play a key role in scaling up small devices to large-area modules. The candidate should have hands-on experience with solar cell fabrication and characterization techniques along with laser scribing to create solar modules. Knowledge of PVD processes (such as sputter coating and thermal evaporation), atomic layer deposition, or optical characterization is a plus. The candidate will be expected to spend a portion of their time hands-on in the laboratory executing, establishing, and managing fabrication and testing procedures. The chosen candidate should also be prepared to take on many roles within a fast-paced, start-up environment that is quickly evolving. The ideal candidate is an excellent oral and written communicator, highly collaborative, and comfortable working as an individual contributor as a member of a growing team. The PV Module Engineer will report to the Director of Module Development.

  • Compensation: Commensurate with experience
    • Manage day-to-day operations in our automated pilot line in a cleanroom environment, including maintaining and optimizing laser systems and processes, writing fabrication recipes and equipment calibration.
    • Lead various projects and initiatives in a dynamic and collaborative environment, e.g., scaling up new transparent OPV device architectures to large-area modules, executing pilot production runs for prototype installations, evaluating and optimizing new and innovative materials, etc.
    • Plan and execute experiments with an exacting focus on efficient experimental design and attention to detail.
    • Effectively collaborate with technicians to achieve team objectives.
    • Assist with general laboratory management activities, including continuous process improvement and documentation, maintaining safe working practices, and managing inventories.
    • Supervise and monitor fabrication processes to ensure smooth system operation, quickly identifying and addressing any process deviations.
    • Summarize and communicate experimental results and observed trends as well as tool status and process details with the rest of the R&D team on a regular basis.
    • Work with system vendors and material suppliers to troubleshoot issues and develop improvements in processes and equipment as needed.
    • Maintain and support a positive, collaborative, work environment.
    • The successful candidate will also be expected to provide support to other initiatives and/or other internal operations of the company, as needed. Of course, the company may ask the employee to take on different responsibilities and job requirements as the company evolves.
      • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field. Industry experience is a plus.
      • 3+ years' hands-on experience with semiconductor thin-film and device fabrication is required. Additional experience with PV module fabrication processes (vacuum deposition systems, laser scribing, thin film encapsulation, busbars and contacts) is a plus.
      • Hands-on experience in electrical characterization of PV devices, and optical and structural characterization of thin films (UV-Vis, AFM, optical profilometry, etc.) is a plus.
      • Highly skilled at process development and optimization.
      • Experience with managing, maintaining, and troubleshooting deposition systems is a plus.
      • Expert proficiency in experimental design.
      • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
      • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including fluency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
      • Excellent project and time management skills with ability to execute multiple parallel projects and juggle competing priorities under pressure.
      • Team player comfortable performing at a high level as an individual contributor.
      • Ability to stand for 2 hours at a time and work with hands extended within a glovebox environment.
      • Ability to lift glass pieces and fixtures weighing up to 10 lbs multiple times a day.
