The Tumor Microenvironment Thematic Research Center (TME TRC) is focused on developing therapeutic targets at the intersection of tumor, stromal and immune biology within the TME with the goal of enhancing responsiveness to checkpoint blockade and targeted therapies and transforming response and durability rates for cancer patients. Comprising of scientists across multiple disciplines we are responsible for the biology and translational science necessary to support drug development from target identification through to first in human studies.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual with deep translational expertise to join the Translational Development team within the Tumor Microenvironment Thematic Research Center (TME TRC) at Bristol Myers Squibb in Redwood City, CA.

Position Responsibilities:

In this role as Director, Oncology Translational Biomarker Strategy Lead, within the TME TRC Translational Development team, the ideal candidate:

  • Will be responsible for the direct management of a team of translational biomarker leads, including goal-setting, deliverables, performance management and reviews and coaching
  • Applies deep scientific knowledge of Oncology/Immuno-Oncology, concepts and methodologies for the development and execution of translational and biomarker strategies for First-in-Human through Proof-of-Concept TME TRC studies (such as clinic-ready pharmacodynamic, mechanism of action, target engagement and patient selection assays and strategies, in alignment with clinical development objectives)
  • Presents supportive arguments for highly complex data interpretation and ideas cross functionally and to senior leadership/governance
  • Works effectively across disciplines/functions to advance and execute translational plans within the team's responsibility, including assay development, qualification/validation, clinical sample analysis, and data analysis and interpretation, including engagement with internal teams and externally (e.g. with CROs and specialty testing labs)
  • Provides guidance, scientific input and biomarker expertise for review of all biomarker aspects of early development plans and collaborations, including input on clinical trial strategies and for relevant documents and plans (such clinical protocols, publications, sample collection tables, sample collection instructions and logistics, investigator brochures, INDs, informed consent, regulatory documents, etc.)
  • Communicates key biomarker program information, risks, risk mitigations and milestones, and manage information flow across key stakeholders including therapeutic area leadership, functional leads and team members
  • Engages with development teams and technical/scientific experts to define, revise and progress biomarker plans and data analysis, as well as to test and advance new processes and approaches as needed.
  • Recommends course of action / troubleshooting to management in ambiguous situation across department
  • Represents Translational Development by serving on cross-functional teams and in due diligence, collaborations and asset integration activities
  • Leverages in depth knowledge of oncology, & clinical development perspectives, and expertise in matrix-based management to oversee and/or lead execution of translational strategies that are multi-disciplinary, and including resource and budget allocation Experience:

    Basic Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's Degree
      • 15+ years of academic and / or industry experience Or
        • Master's Degree
          • 12+ years of academic and / or industry experience Or
            • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences
              • 8+ years of academic and / or industry experience
                • 6+ years of leadership experience Preferred Qualifications:
                  • Strongly prefer PhD, MD or MD/PhD with 10+ years of relevant experience including 6-8 years in biopharmaceutical industry
                  • At least 6 years' experience in Oncology/Immuno-Oncology translational science, with direct experience in translational roles supporting early-stage trials in a biopharma/biotech setting, including a working knowledge of all functional areas of drug development, (e.g. biology, clinical development, diagnostic development, disease biology) and a deep understanding of the role of biomarkers in drug development
                  • Proven track-record in successfully managing and leading a team of scientists and execution of strategies via a cross-functional matrixed team, with at least 2-4 years managerial experience
                  • Experienced in presentation of strategies, plans, risks and mitigations in senior management and governance meetings, including excellent verbal and written communication skills
                  • Experience in the design and qualification/validation of clinical trial biomarker assays, clinical sample data analysis and interpretation, and sample collection strategies in FIH through at least phase 2 trials
                  • Demonstrated ability to lead others through change by navigating ambiguity, creating the context, and engaging individuals
                  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where speed is paramount
                  • Experienced in working as a topic expert, outside of a traditional functional environment, in a team unified around assets, and with internal and external (e.g. CRO, specialty lab) stakeholders
                  • Demonstrated experience in the appropriate application of various scientific technologies into translational research strategies (e.g. flow cytometry, immunoassays, genomics, immunohistochemistry and multiplex approaches, etc.)
                  • Demonstrated ability of working effectively to influence stakeholders in a highly dynamic matrix organization such as BMS and the ability to grow new leaders and delegate key projects appropriately The starting compensation for this job is a range from $194,000.00 - $268,400.00, plus incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility).

                    The starting pay takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and where the job is performed. Final, individual compensation is decided based on demonstrated experience.
