Job Title: Director of Product Development

Location: Redwood City, CA

Purpose statement:

The Director of Product Development provides strategic leadership and product development expertise and leads genomic assay and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) library preparation development within the R&D team.   

Essential Functions:

  • Leads genomic assay and NGS library preparation development R&D team in a hands-on manner from feasibility to product launch

  • Effectively plans, resources and achieves project milestones and timelines

  • Provides leadership in the development process to ensure project deliverables are achieved

  • Coaches and support team members to ensure best practice in the execution of product development projects

  • Presents new technology or product talks at scientific conferences or customer sites

  • Proactively engages with customers and sales representatives in marketing and launch of new products

  • Establishes productive collaborations with external key opinion leaders for new technology and product development

  • Innovates new ideas and works with Legal to draft patent applications

  • Conducts external technology evaluations and participates in decisions and follow-up actions

  • Partners with PMO, Bioinformatics, V&V, Quality, Manufacturing and Legal for new product development

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Molecular/Cell Biology, Genetics or related field required.

Professional Experience:

  • At least 15 years of research & development experience and at least 10 years of biotech industry experience in NGS development required

  • 5+ years developing kits or assays for the Illumina NGS platform

  • Expert knowledge and experience in qPCR and NGS development with a proven record of developing assays from concept to product

  • Experiences in NGS for enrichment, library construction and sequencing

Travel Requirements

Frequent travel (more than 5%) is expected.

Physical Requirements:

Exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently

  • Sitting: to assume a position in which the weight is largely supported by the buttocks, usually with the body vertical and the thighs horizontal.

  • Using Fingers/Grasping/Feeling: writing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers or palm and perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touch.

  • Reaching: extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

  • Standing: maintaining an upright position.

  • Walking: moving about on foot to accomplish tasks.

  • Lifting: raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.

  • Repetitive Motion: substantial movements (motion) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

  • Bending: bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist and/or bending leg; bending legs at knee to come to rest or kneel.

  • Pushing/Pulling: using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward/using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.

  • Climbing: stairs, stools, ramps, ladders.

Visual Acuity:

  • Ability to read pertinent printed material and distinguish colors.

  • Ability to accurately read measurements on equipment.

  • Ability to prepare and read written documentation; use of computer.
