To help us meet our goals we are looking to hire an experienced Downstream Process Development Scientist (II, III, Sr.) to join our Bioprocess Development team. You will play a key role as a downstream SME to develop, optimize and scale up robust purification processes, primarily for life science enzymes used in diagnostic and other molecular biology applications. You will be responsible for the design and execution of downstream processes at different stages of development, as well as coordination within project teams. The downstream process development scientist will also be responsible for growing and developing a team focused on Life Sciences enzymes.

    In this role your day will be filled with the following:
    • Develop primary recovery unit operations at the bench scale (0.1 to 10 L) such as centrifugation, homogenization, flocculation, tangential-flow filtration (TFF), and depth filtration.
    • Develop chromatography unit operations, from screening and characterization to optimization and initial scale-up.
    • Plan and execute accelerated and long-term stability studies for purified enzymes.
    • Adapt and troubleshoot research analytical methods such as HPLC, SDS-PAGE, enzyme activity, nuclease activity and DNA quantitation assays to quantify yield, activity, and purity at various stages of the manufacturing process.
    • Coordinate with business and technical groups as well as customers to produce purified enzymes of appropriate quantity and quality.
    • Author key documents such as development reports, and technology transfer packages.
    • Communicate with technical and business-oriented audiences within the company through presentations and written reports.
    • Mentor and train a growing team of junior scientists and research associates focused on Life Science enzymes.

      To be successful in this role your background and experience should include:
      • BS with 10+ years, MS with 6+ years or Ph.D. with 3-5 or more years industry experience in purifying and analyzing enzymes relevant to life sciences.
      • Proven track record in project and/or product management for life sciences enzymes.
      • A history of successfully managing projects with contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs).
      • Strong technical knowledge and direct hands-on experience with downstream processing unit operations such as chromatography, tangential-flow filtration, centrifugation, homogenization, etc.
      • Sound understanding of protein biochemistry, recombinant protein expression in microbial hosts, and molecular biology
      • Understanding of engineering issues related to process scale up and ability to apply both practical and analytical skills to implement relevant scale down models.Ability to prioritize responsibilities, multi-task and remain flexible with changing needs.
      • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (oral and written).

        A Working knowledge of the following would be deemed a huge plus!:
        • Experimental design and data analysis capabilities including Design of Experiments (DOE).
